About

Biography
Born, raised and educated in Canada, Judy’s last studio was in Inverness, Florida. She furthered her art studies at the Cleveland Institute of Art in Ohio and Fullerton College in California.

As a realistic sculptor she sought out, and had the good fortune of studying under master sculptors Bruno Lucchesi, Stanley Bliefeld, Richard MacDonald, Carl Floyd, John Clague, Eugene Daub and Tuck Langland.

Awards included best of show, first place, artists’ choice and honorable mentions at juried shows in Ohio, Arizona, California, Kentucky and Florida. Collectors included Parnelli Jones, Efrem Zimbalist Jr., Carroll Shelby, Alf Powis, Mrs. John R. Bradfield, Tuck Langland, Betty White, President Gerald R. Ford and The Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

A touch of red can be found on each of Judy’s bronzes, a “signature” that has developed naturally over the years. This is at times obvious, at times very subtle, but always great fun for the viewer to find.

Process
My artwork incorporates the many skills of traditional, figurative sculpture. Models are used to bring a realistic representation along with the intangible essence of the subject to the viewer. All of my pieces are presented in bronze with richly textured surfaces to add tremendous character to the piece.

The process used for producing the bronze is the lost wax method of casting. I cover my initial clay or wax figure with a silicone rubber mold, creating a hollow version of my sculpture, but destroying the original in the process. Hot wax is poured into and out of the rubber mold which, when set and removed, is a hollow version of the sculpture. The wax is then refined with hot metal tools to bring it back to the appearance of the original. This wax is then taken to a bronze art foundry for investing of the wax and pouring of the metal. I am always present for a final metal check. Propane torches are used to heat the metal and apply chemicals to give the bronze its final patina.

Artist statement
I use my ability to capture, in an honest manner, the grace, elegance and variety of the human figure. Whether it is a relaxed adult or a vaulting child, I try to portray the energy, mood and character of my subject.
